Video allegations from woman regarding her son baseless

Manama

Inspector General of the Interior Minister, Major-General Ebrahim Habib Ghaith said they investigated a video being circulated that shows a mother asking for help for her son.

He stated the investigation showed the complainant presented inaccurate and baseless allegations that accused security authorities and Interior Ministry officers of not conducting proper legal proceedings in the case.

The incident took place in late 2012, according to the Inspected General.  The woman's son, 19, caused a traffic accident in which a 49-year-old driver was also involved. After the mishap, the 19 year-old reportedly physically attacked the latter.

The Directorate of Capital Governorate Police and the General Directorate of Traffic handled the case and referred it to the Public Prosecution.  Last year, the court sentenced the suspect to 5 years in prison.  After appeal, the sentence was commuted to three years.

Regarding allegations that the woman's son sustained injuries and wasn’t referred to the doctor after arrest, the Directorate of Capital Governorate Police stated he was taken to police’s doctor before being referred to detention, as documented in his case files.

The Public Prosecution also referred him to a medical examiner who mentioned in his report about the minor injuries sustained during the accident.  At the time, the mother was told that she could challenge the investigation procedures through the Public Prosecution.

On January 18, the woman came up with a second complaint that the authorities were forcing the responsibility on her son, as he was very young. Regarding this allegation, the Inspector General's investigation indicated her son was not accused of being intoxicated or running away.  He was referred to the Traffic Public Prosecution and he confessed, the Inspector General said.

His confession was recorded in the Public Prosecution’s statement.

The General Prosecution added the Interior Ministry has the right to take the legal procedures against such accusations, stressing that the Public Prosecution is the concerned authority to investigate the incident.

Anyone with evidence should present it to the authorities rather than making accusations through social media. Such an act can be penalized, according to article 364 and 365 of the penal code law.
