Arcapita Mosque wins top award

Manama : Arcapita Mosque won Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture in its second cycle, which received nominations for 122 mosques from the GCC region.

The award recognises Arcapita Mosque’s contemporary architecture and creative designs, embodying its Islamic uniqueness and aesthetic building characteristics.

The Mosque, designed by Skidmore, Ownings & Merrill (SOM), is centrally located in Bahrain Bay, Manama. Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture was founded in 2011, to recognise architectural excellence in mosque engineering and construction.

The award ceremony was held in Jeddah under the patronage of Prince Khalid Al Faisal, Advisor to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, Governor of Mecca Region. The ceremony was also attended by Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Award, and a number of high ranking dignitaries and guests.

The Mosque’s unique design allows natural lighting to flow in through forty windows from three sides of the building. The lighting system for the interior and exterior façade of the Mosque is controlled by the use of an automatic astronomic solar time clock and manual override, allowing for the scenes to be chosen depending on prayer times.

On this occasion, Abdulaziz bin Hamad Aljomaih, Chairman of the Board of Arcapita Group said, “Arcapita Mosque’s winning this prestigious regional award drives us to continue to expend utmost efforts to build house of worship and mosques throughout the region.”
