Fire breaks out in Mina Salman, millions lost in the blaze

Manama : A fire that broke out at a warehouse in Mina Salman in the wee hours yesterday which lasted around 15 hours causing losses of millions of dinars.

A persistent fire ravaged a warehouse in Mina Salman until evening yesterday. The fire that erupted at an Intercol Warehouse was described as “extremely difficult to contain”. 

According to company sources, the fire broke out at 3:00 am. 

An employee of the company told DT News that nobody was injured. “Fortunately, all workers there were safe and unharmed,” the employee said. 

Another employee said that it was the consumer goods division and the medical division of the warehouse were the first to get ravaged by the fire.

“We are sure a huge amount of products worth lots of money has been lost. The losses cannot be estimated as the fire is not yet extinguished and the site is examined,” the source from the Civil Defence said.

The incident caused traffic congestion in the area as well as in the adjacent highways. The area was marked by thick black smoke, which could be seen from several blocks away, witnesses said.

The Ministry of Interior confirmed the fire and stated that the Civil Defence has started fighting it with the help of the police. 

According to Civil Defence General Director Brigadier-General Abdulaziz Rashid Al Amer, around 24 vehicles and 95 personnel were deployed to the scene. One Civil Defence personnel had sustained minor injuries in the midst of the struggle.

High winds and the inflammable items such as medicines, chemicals and tobacco materials kept in the warehouses caused the fire to blow up. “However, with the continuous effort the Civil Defence was able to control the fire from spreading to other areas,” he said. 

The fire was, however, extinguished by around 6.00 pm, said a ministry spokesperson. 

Though there had been talk about the fire was sparked off by a short circuit, the Ministry of Interior did not confirm it. 

According to Rashid Al Amer, the investigation into the cause of the fire will made and the facts behind it will be discovered.
