Lab to check cyber attack launched

Manama : A cyber security laboratory for developing solutions and to address the threat of ever growing cyber attacks was launched yesterday.

The laboratory launched by C5, a technology investment firm, at its premises in Sanabis, is reported to spread awareness on cyber security breaches and help develop solutions to address the growing cyber attacks in the MENA region.

The lab will also work as a space for seminars and training workshops. “It will serve as a stage for strengthening partnerships between public and private sectors.” said Hadyah Fathalla, executive director, C5.

“The resurfacing of Shamoon virus that crippled Aramco’s computers in 2012, was described by former US Defence secretary Panetta as the most destructive cyber attack on a private business. This was just one of many attacks that highlighted the real threat of cyber crime in the region,” Fathalla said. “Bahrain’s proximity to Saudi and its continued growth in finance and ICT, among other relevant industries, positions it well to serve as a regional hub,” she said.

Principal cyber security experts made speeches on the occasion.

Ron Moultrie, former director of operations, US National Security Agency, said, “The initiative will bring together the best cross-industry and sector minds to build awareness, create better understanding as well as explore and develop cutting edge solutions, and inspire innovations in the cyber security space. It is an honour for me to participate in the opening of the lab. This represents an incredible opportunity for Bahrain and the GCC to become an area of excellence in this field,” he said.

Christian Stendevad, Executive Vice President of Omada highlighted the importance of cyber attaacks and security threat. “Cyber security must be a high priority to protect IP, confidential and personal data and systems. The right IT cyber security infrastructure needs appropriate governance processes to enforce right controls,” he said.

The lab will have an active monthly calendar of events to engage GCC governments, enterprises and academic institutions.
