Manama:

Private schools paying low salaries to teachers: Beware! Teachers are being asked to report this issue to the Ministry of Education.

Head of Woman and Child Committee in Parliament MP Dr Jameela Al Sammak urged teachers not to accept such low salaries.

She said the Ministry of Education has the right to supervise and see the teachers do not get lower salaries.

She added it was the shared responsibility of the Ministry of Education and private schools to address this issue.

Meanwhile, teachers working in private schools in the Kingdom are struggling to eke out a decent living as some of them are being paid less than BD200 per month, DT News has learnt.

According to sources, some private school teachers are living in a very deplorable condition and they are bound to take home tuitions in order to meet their day-to-day expenses.

A private school teacher, who did not wish to be named, said there should be a legislation limiting the minimum salary to BD300 for a fresher.

There are no clear rules regarding the salary packages of the teachers. Those who are hired from their native countries get higher salaries than those who come here and find the job of a teacher, sources said.

The principal of a private school told DT News that he himself felt the salaries of teachers were very low.

He said the school fees in such schools were about BD20 and it was impossible to manage the school affairs with that amount.

However, in certain schools, salaries were good as students pay BD150 per month as fees.

“If you want to pay the teachers well, you will have to raise the fee structure as well,” he said.

He said the minimum salary of a Bahraini in such private schools is BD400 and he thought this figure should be set as a minimum salary for every teacher irrespective of his/her nationality.
