Bahrain recalls pediatric syrup

National Health  Regulatory Authority (NHRA) yesterday warned the public against using the drug after one of its batches was found with a manufacturing defect.

Parents have been warned against buying the children’s medication Advil Suspension while pharmacies have been instructed not to sell it amid health concerns.

American pharmaceutical company Pfizer, which produces the drug, has recalled it from various GCC states including Bahrain.

“The National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) warns the public to stop using Children’s Advil Suspension manufactured by Pfizer. Because of potential risk of inconsistencies in dosing of the product, clumps of Ibuprofen may form in the bottle and lead to higher or lower doses that are given to children if it is not shaken well before each use.” NHRA stated.

It urged pharmacies to stop selling the product. “Stop sale and distribution of the impacted lot, withdraw all the stock of impacted lot from the market,” it stated.

Pfizer also confirmed that certain batches were defective and that it’s recalling it from Bahrain and other GCC states.

“Pfizer is voluntarily recalling certain lots of Children’s Advil (Ibuprofen 100 mg/5 mL USP) Ibuprofen Oral Suspension products in Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, UAE and Oman,” a Pfizer statement published by Dubai-based Arabian Business
read.

“The lots are being voluntarily recalled because these lots may not maintain release specifications throughout shelf life. Local regulatory authorities in affected countries were notified and agreed to conduct the recall. We are working closely with local health authorities in affected countries to complete the required actions in due time,” Pfizer stated.
