Pune: A charter aircraft carrying Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar crashed early on Wednesday as it attempted to land near Baramati in Pune district, officials and media outlets reported, resulting in the death of the senior leader and multiple others aboard.

The plane, reportedly flying from Mumbai to Baramati, encountered difficulties on approach and went down in flames on or near the runway, scattering wreckage and smoke across an open field. Early visuals circulated by broadcasters showed charred remains of the jet and emergency responders combing the site.

State authorities confirmed that Pawar, aged 66 and a veteran political figure in Maharashtra’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), did not survive the crash. Multiple other passengers, including staff and crew, also perished.

Emergency services rushed to the scene following the distress call, but severe damage to the aircraft complicated rescue efforts. Local hospitals received injured persons, though officials have not released a full casualty list.

This tragic incident is now the focus of an official inquiry, with aviation authorities expected to investigate technical, weather, and procedural factors that may have contributed to the crash.

Pawar, who played a central role in Maharashtra’s financial planning and governance and was a prominent figure in state politics, leaves behind a significant political legacy. Leaders from across the country are issuing condolences as news of the crash spreads.

Modi shares Condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the death of Ajit Pawar, remembering him as a mass leader with a strong grassroots connect and a reputation for tireless public service. In a statement, Modi said Pawar was widely respected for his administrative acumen and his commitment to empowering the poor and marginalized sections of society. Calling the loss “very shocking and saddening,” the Prime Minister conveyed his condolences to Pawar’s family and admirers, paying tribute to his enduring contribution to Maharashtra’s public life.
