Bahrain's Global Role Takes Focus at UN

Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani led the Kingdom's delegation at the opening session of the general debate of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The session is being held under the theme “Restoring Trust and Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All” and is chaired by Dr. Khalil Al-Rahman, President of the 81st session of the General Assembly, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres participating.

Bahrain is taking part in the session as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2026–2027 term, reaffirming its commitment to the UN Charter, multilateral cooperation and efforts to strengthen international peace and security.

The Bahraini delegation includes Shaikh Abdullah bin Rashid Al Khalifa, Ambassador to the United States; Ambassador Jamal Fares Al Rowaie, Permanent Representative to the UN in New York; Dana Imad Hamza, Assistant Undersecretary for Sustainable Development at the Ministry of Sustainable Development; Ambassador Sheikh Abdullah bin Ali Al Khalifa, Director-General of Bilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Ambassador Saeed Abdulkhaliq Saeed, Head of the Ministry's Coordination and Follow-up Sector.

Opening the General Assembly, Guterres called for de-escalation in the Middle East and urged countries to prioritise dialogue.

He also called for an end to fighting, the continued delivery of humanitarian assistance and the full restoration of freedom of navigation in accordance with international law.

The UN chief warned of widening geopolitical divisions and continuing conflicts, stating that the transition towards a multipolar world is an irreversible trend. He stressed that this shift requires a more representative and effective multilateral system based on the UN Charter and international law.
