Electricity Use Almost Doubles Since 2008

Consumption of electricity in Bahrain hit a record 19,391.6 gigawatt-hours in 2025, rising for a fifth year running as industrial use grew.

Power use rose by 382.6 GWh, or 2 pc, from 19,009 GWh in 2024. Over five years, demand has risen 18.7 pc, adding more than 3,000 GWh.

Industry recorded the fastest growth, with consumption rising 65.7 pc from 2,174.8 GWh in 2020 to 3,603.1 GWh in 2025.

Homes still accounted for the largest share, at 48.4 pc of all electricity used. Commercial premises accounted for 32.8 pc, industry 18.6 pc and agriculture 0.3 pc.

Power use has almost doubled since 2008, when consumption stood at 9,702 GWh. By 2025 it was up 99.9 pc.

Industrial demand rose 5.1 pc in 2025 alone, adding 176.1 GWh and making up about 46 pc of the year’s increase.

Household use reached 9,384.1 GWh, up 0.7 pc, while commercial consumption rose 2.3 pc to 6,354 GWh.

Together, homes and commercial premises used 81.2 pc of Bahrain’s electricity.

Net generation also reached a record, rising 2.1 pc to 20,298.5 GWh from 19,873.1 GWh in 2024.

Al Dur 2 generated the most power, at 7,748.1 GWh, followed by Al Dur 1 at 5,007.3 GWh, Hidd at 4,984.9 GWh and Al Ezzel at 2,707.8 GWh.

The two Al Dur plants produced 12,755.4 GWh between them.

New plants and grid works are being built as electricity use rises. The Sitra independent power and water project is planned with electricity capacity of 1,400MW to 1,500MW.

The 400kV Jasra substation opened in early 2026 as the largest transmission substation on Bahrain’s grid.

Bahrain is also aiming to produce 20 pc of its electricity from renewable sources by 2035.
