A Northern Municipal Council member has called for the new 2,000-square-metre Maqasees market to be managed by the Northern Municipality and reserved for long-standing Bahraini vendors.
Abdulla Mubarak Belal Al Qubaisi, representing the Ninth Constituency, submitted the proposal during the council's latest meeting, warning the project must not lose the popular character it was built to protect.
The market is planned for Hoorat A'ali, near the Farmers' Market.
"The Maqasees market is not merely a place for selling used goods—it is a popular heritage landmark reflecting Bahrain's social and cultural identity," Al Qubaisi said.
Vendors first
He said leasing priority must go to Bahraini vendors, particularly those from the former Manama and Isa Town markets, with strict rules barring subletting to expatriate workers.
The proposal recommends market operate during evening hours Sunday to Thursday, with morning and evening sessions on weekends.
