This week, Bahrain celebrates a quarter-century of championing women's empowerment, as the Supreme Council for Women (SCW) marks its Silver Jubilee — 25 years since its founding on August 22, 2001.
Established under the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the SCW built the legislative and institutional backbone that propelled Bahraini women into national life. This year's celebrations, themed "25 Years at the Heart of the Reform Project," carry added weight as they coincide with the "Year of Isa the Great," which honors the legacy of Sheikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa.
Women in the Legislature
The Shura Council's Women and Child Affairs Committee highlighted tangible progress: women now hold 25% of seats in the current legislative term—ten of 40 members—a milestone the committee described as reflecting "continuous political and institutional empowerment."
Tributes poured in from across Bahrain's institutions. Muharraq Governor Salman bin Isa bin Hindi Al Mannai praised the council's achievements under HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, calling it "one of the most prominent outcomes" of the King's reform project.
Shura Council Chairman Ali bin Saleh Al Saleh echoed the sentiment, crediting the HM King's "commitment to equality and equal opportunities" for making Bahrain "a distinguished model" for women's empowerment regionally.
Looking Ahead
Officials say the anniversary marks not an endpoint but a transition — toward sustainability, impact and leadership — aligned with Bahrain's National Plan for the Advancement of Bahraini Women 2025–2026, focused on family stability, economic participation, decision-making and quality of life.
