Kinshasa : The Democratic Republic of Congo has received 16,250 doses of the Ervebo Ebola vaccine as the country battles its deadliest Ebola outbreak, which has killed 2,516 people.

The shipment arrived in Kinshasa on Friday as part of 70,000 doses being made available to the DRC by the World Health Organization (WHO). Of these, 50,000 will be given to frontline and health workers, while 20,000 will be used in a clinical trial.

The outbreak, declared on May 15, has so far recorded 5,290 confirmed cases and is spreading rapidly across parts of northern and eastern DRC, where healthcare access remains limited.

Ervebo is approved for the Zaire strain of Ebola, but the current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain. WHO experts are studying whether the vaccine can provide protection against it, with early animal studies showing some potential.

The WHO has recommended a large-scale human trial of Ervebo. Two other vaccines targeting the Bundibugyo strain are also undergoing clinical trials.
