Parliament voted on Thursday to remove MPs Abdulnabi Salman, Mamdouh Al Saleh and Mahdi Al Shuwaikh from office after a roll-call vote held at the start of the weekly session.

Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam announced the three seats vacant after MPs voted individually in favour of the recommendation submitted by the Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee. MP Hanan Fardan was absent from the session.

The move followed a request filed by 37 MPs, accusing the three lawmakers of breaching parliamentary duties, losing public trust and harming the honour of representing citizens during a debate held on 28 April.

The controversy stemmed from discussions on Decree-Law No. 13 of 2024, which amended provisions of the Judicial Authority Law. The three MPs had criticised state measures taken against individuals accused of praising Iranian attacks on Bahrain and voted against the decree-law.

According to the committee report, the lawmakers’ stance sparked public anger and was seen as conflicting with the parliamentary oath and national responsibilities. The report also referenced remarks by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa condemning those who stood with “traitors” instead of defending the nation.

The Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee unanimously backed the request after hearing statements and defences from the three MPs during a meeting on 4 May.

Under Article 99 of Bahrain’s Constitution, Parliament may terminate an MP’s membership if they lose trust and standing or breach the duties of office, provided the decision is approved by a two-thirds majority of the chamber.
