Some 1,500 ships trapped in Gulf due to Iran-US conflict: IMO

Panama City: The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has issued a warning regarding the shipping blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, where approximately 1,500 vessels and 20,000 crew members are currently trapped.
This crisis is a direct result of the conflict unleashed on February 28, which has led to aggressive reprisals and the closure of one of the world's most vital trade arteries. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez emphasized that these stranded seafarers are innocent workers caught in a geopolitical situation entirely beyond their control.
The human and economic costs of the impasse are mounting rapidly. At least ten sailors have perished in more than 30 attacks on vessels, prompting the IMO to advise all shipping companies to avoid the Gulf to prevent further loss of life.
Because a fifth of the world’s petroleum and gas traditionally passes through this strait, the blockade has already caused a significant spike in global hydrocarbon prices.
While there were brief discussions of a naval operation to force the strait open, diplomatic efforts currently center on waiting for an Iranian response to proposals aimed at ending the war and restoring maritime passage.
