A 36-year-old Asian man has been sentenced to three years in prison and fined 3,000 Bahraini dinars by the High Criminal Court after being convicted of forcing a domestic worker into exploitative and abusive conditions.
The court also ordered him to pay for the victim’s repatriation and ruled that he will be deported after serving his sentence.
The victim, a 24-year-old Asian woman, came to Bahrain in search of work but was instead subjected to forced labour without pay. She was made to work in multiple households while being confined in an abandoned apartment with no electricity or running water.
According to court findings, she was beaten and slapped when she asked for her wages or requested to return home. She was also deprived of food and frequently moved between locations to prevent her escape.
Crying
The case came to light when a neighbour heard the victim crying for help. The witness provided her with water and immediately contacted authorities after learning she was being held against her will.
Police later found the apartment locked from the outside, confirming she had been unlawfully detained. Investigations also revealed prior similar accusations against the defendant.
During questioning, the accused admitted to sending the victim to work in different homes to collect money. Prosecutors charged him with human trafficking, stating he exploited her vulnerability for forced labour without pay.
