OIC Holds UN Meeting on Bahrain’s Request Condemning Iranian Attacks

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) convened a meeting at the United Nations headquarters in New York at the request of the Kingdom of Bahrain, representing the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), as Bahrain presides over the 46th session of the GCC.

Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jamal Faris Al-Ruwaihi, opened the session by expressing the Kingdom’s appreciation for the OIC Secretariat’s swift issuance of a statement strongly condemning the Iranian attacks. He also commended member states that released statements denouncing the attacks and supporting the GCC. Ambassador Al-Ruwaihi extended thanks to Turkey for its efforts during its tenure as OIC chair, noting that Turkey had also been targeted by Iranian attacks, which the OIC had condemned.

The ambassador emphasized that the GCC states had worked diligently to facilitate dialogue between Iran and the international community, aiming to resolve differences peacefully and spare the region from escalation. Despite these efforts, the GCC countries found themselves subjected to cowardly, treacherous, and unjustified attacks, which he described as violations of Article 2, Paragraph 4, of the United Nations Charter.

Ambassador Al-Ruwaihi noted the discrepancy between Iran’s statements and its actions, highlighting that while Iran’s messages to GCC leaders claimed respect for regional sovereignty, it continued to launch attacks on civilian targets, residential areas, and critical infrastructure.

During the meeting, the GCC countries’ permanent representatives underscored that Iran’s aggression violated the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, international law, international humanitarian law, and other international agreements. They highlighted the number of missiles and drones targeting GCC states and emphasized that Iran’s attacks were aimed at civilian, rather than military, targets—contrary to Iran’s claims. The representatives warned that Iran’s attempts to close the Strait of Hormuz constituted a dangerous escalation that threatens both regional and global security.
