Over 22,000 Livestock Arrive in Bahrain Ahead of Ramadan
The Kingdom of Bahrain has confirmed the arrival of over 22,500 heads of livestock and nearly 10,000 tons of imported meat, as authorities continue to secure additional shipments ahead of Ramadan.
Engineer Asim Abdul Latif Abdullah, Undersecretary for Agriculture and Animal Wealth at the Ministry of Municipalities and Agriculture Affairs, stated that the ministry has completed all necessary preparations to ensure sufficient supplies of live animals, red meat, and poultry during the holy month. This includes facilitating import permits in accordance with Law No. 8 of 2003 on the veterinary quarantine system within Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, and the executive regulations issued under Decision No. 7 of 2004.
From early January to mid-February 2026, Bahrain received 22,500 heads of livestock, including 20,300 sheep and 2,250 cattle. Additional shipments are expected in the coming days, comprising 30,000 sheep, 1,500 cattle, and 100 camels, following completion of the required permits.
Imported meat, both chilled and frozen, has reached 9,853 tons, including 3,294 tons of red meat and 6,559 tons of poultry. To meet the rising demand during Ramadan, the ministry has approved 250 additional import permits.
Engineer Abdullah highlighted that demand for meat typically rises during Ramadan, both for household consumption and the restaurant sector. The ministry continues to work on diversifying import sources and opening new markets to maintain stable food supplies for the local market.
