Bahrain’s Public Prosecution has participated in the conference of the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions, held under the title “Protecting Children in the Digital Space: Challenges, Legislation and Preventive Measures”, with the attendance of ministers, senior officials and a number of experts and speakers from across the Arab world.
The conference served as an important platform for showcasing national experiences and exchanging regional expertise on issues related to human rights and sustainable development.
During the event, Noura Jamal Al-Mualla, Head of the Family and Child Prosecution, presented a working paper titled “Towards a Safe Digital Environment for Children: Key Challenges and Legal Responses”. In her presentation, she addressed the concept of the digital environment, the risks faced by children in the online world, and legal frameworks criminalising emerging offences in digital spaces. She also stressed the importance of parental supervision when children use digital games and online platforms.
Al-Mualla highlighted the Public Prosecution’s efforts to protect children in the digital space, including the inclusion of children within its social care initiative “Ri‘aya”, which provides psychological and counselling support, as well as the launch of the awareness campaign “Protection Campaign”, aimed at raising public awareness of digital risks and promoting safe reporting mechanisms.
She concluded her paper by outlining the “single interview” mechanism for child victims in sexual assault cases, describing it as a pioneering experience for Bahrain at the regional level. The mechanism aims to protect children’s privacy and psychological wellbeing by preventing repeated recounting of traumatic incidents.
