6.7-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southern Peru

Lima: A massive 6.7-magnitude earthquake slammed Peru's southern Andes on Thursday, causing panic and evacuations in numerous locations, according to the USGS.
The earthquake struck around 1 p.m. local time, with its epicentre 38 kilometres northwest of Upahuacho in the Ayacucho region. The USGS estimated its depth to be around 66.7 km.
The tremor was felt in Ica, Arequipa, Huancavelica, Apurimac, Cusco, and the capital Lima. At least two persons were hurt during the evacuation at Coracora.
Authorities reported damage to 22 residences, six health centers, and a school across various regions. Rockfalls were also reported near Coracora, and emergency personnel were dispatched to the affected areas to assess the situation.
According to Peru's Geophysical Institute, the earthquake happened at a depth of roughly 108 kilometres. There were later reports of an aftershock with a magnitude of 4.2.
The Peruvian Navy ruled out a tsunami threat. Peru experiences extremely frequent earthquakes due to its position within the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire.
