Bahrain Calls for Political Solution to Ukraine Conflict at UN Security Council

Manama: Ambassador Nancy Abdullah Jamal, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York, participated in an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council convened to discuss the latest developments in Ukraine.

During the meeting, Ambassador Jamal delivered Bahrain’s statement, reaffirming the Kingdom’s support for regional and international diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a political and lasting resolution to the Russian-Ukrainian crisis. She stressed that any solution must be grounded in international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2774, in a manner that contributes to security, stability, and sustainable peace at both regional and international levels.

The Ambassador expressed Bahrain’s deep concern over the continuation of the conflict into its fourth year, noting that military operations remain ongoing and that civilians continue to bear the brunt of the war. She highlighted the extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, which has undermined the provision of basic services at a time when humanitarian needs are increasing.

The statement underscored the importance of refraining from actions that negatively impact civilian infrastructure and facilities, embassies and diplomatic missions, premises of international organisations, and other civilian objects, in accordance with international norms and conventions. In this context, Bahrain expressed its regret over the damage sustained by the Embassy of the State of Qatar in Kyiv.

Ambassador Jamal noted that the Kingdom values the diplomatic and humanitarian efforts undertaken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the State of Qatar, including mediation initiatives, prisoner exchange arrangements, the provision of humanitarian assistance, and facilitation of detainee exchanges.

She further emphasised the importance Bahrain attaches to achieving tangible progress in the talks mediated by His Excellency President Donald Trump of the United States between the parties to the conflict, describing them as a substantive diplomatic initiative aimed at reaching a lasting ceasefire and enhancing stability in Europe.

The statement concluded by stressing the need to keep channels of dialogue and communication open, strengthen consultation and coordination mechanisms among all concerned parties, and advance a comprehensive negotiation process that addresses the root causes of the conflict and the security concerns of all sides, in order to ensure a sustainable and peaceful resolution.
