Bahrain Named First Hub for GCC ‘One-Stop’ Travel

The Gulf region is stepping into a new era of unity and digital transformation, as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) continues to roll out major regional projects connecting nations through travel, trade, technology, and infrastructure.

After years of planning and discussions, several of these long-term initiatives are finally becoming a reality shaping the GCC into a more connected and collaborative economic bloc.

“One-Stop” Travel System

One of the most talked-about developments this week came as the GCC approved the first phase of a “one-stop” travel system, a move aimed at simplifying travel for Gulf nationals. The system allows citizens to complete all travel procedures, passport control, customs, and security checks, at a single point, eliminating the need to repeat the same steps at arrival destinations.

According to GCC Secretary-General Jasem Al-Budaiwi, the pilot phase will begin in December, connecting Bahrain and the UAE through air travel. If successful, it will later be implemented across all six GCC member states. “The one-stop system will simplify travel for citizens, reduce waiting times, and improve coordination across the region,” said Al-Budaiwi.

Under this system, a Bahraini traveler departing from Manama to Dubai will complete all exit and entry checks in Bahrain, and upon arrival in Dubai, can proceed directly as if arriving from a domestic destination. This landmark initiative is expected to reduce airport congestion, strengthen regional security, and boost tourism and business connectivity, marking a major step toward the GCC’s long-term vision of economic and logistical integration.

GCC Pavilion Opens in Bahrain

Shortly after the announcement, Jasem Al-Budaiwi visited Bahrain for the inauguration of the GCC Pavilion at the National Museum, coinciding with the lead-up to the 46th GCC Summit set to be hosted in Bahrain this December.

The event was attended by HE Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Alzayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and highlighted the Kingdom’s central role in regional cooperation. The pavilion takes visitors through the four key stages of Gulf unity—from the pre-foundation era, to the formation and building phases, leading to today’s era of achievement.

“I encourage the people of Bahrain, both citizens and residents, to visit the pavilion, as it is rich in information that clearly illustrates what the GCC is,” said Al-Budaiwi.“We also look forward with great enthusiasm to the Kingdom of Bahrain’s chairmanship of the next GCC session.”told Daily Tribune.

Among the displays that captured visitors’ attention was the Gulf Railway Project, a long-anticipated transportation network that aims to connect all GCC nations by rail, enhancing both passenger and cargo movement across the region.

Expanding Trade

The exhibition highlighted the GCC’s ongoing efforts to strengthen trade and business integration among member states. Among the key achievements is the ability for GCC companies to open branches in other member countries, enjoying the same treatment as local firms.

The region also allows the import and export of national products without the need for local agents, while trade policies have been unified under a shared GCC Trade Policy Document to enhance external trade relations. Additionally, GCC citizens now enjoy equal rights in company ownership, stock trading, and investment activities across the member states. Collectively, these measures are designed to foster a single Gulf market, boost private sector collaboration, and expand economic opportunities for businesses and investors throughout the region.

E-Government Integration

Digital integration and e-government initiatives were another major highlight of the exhibition. The GCC countries are committed to advancing smart services, establishing ethical frameworks for artificial intelligence, and building cross-border e-governance systems. Key developments include the launch of a unified smart electronic portal accessible via web and mobile platforms in both Arabic and English, as well as the connection of e-government networks, enabling citizens to access government services in any member state while residing in another.

Additionally, the GCC has prepared a guideline for AI ethics, ensuring that innovation across all sectors is both responsible and effective, reflecting the region’s vision for a connected and digitally advanced Gulf.
