The Ministry of Education will launch a pilot food programme for all public-school students from the next academic year, supplying complete healthy meals through private-sector caterers priced between 200 and 800 fils per meal.
The ministry said the service will be delivered under contracts with specialist nutrition companies and will meet high standards of quality and food safety. It added that menus will include essential nutrients and appropriate calorie levels to support pupils’ physical and cognitive development, with the aim of helping learning and daily energy. The initiative forms part of plans to upgrade school services and introduce a new model for school canteens. The ministry will run a full review during the school year, drawing on feedback from parents and pupils to refine the programme and keep standards high.
In July, a tender to operate school canteens was issued through the Tender Board. Five firms bid: Food City, Radwan Bakeries, AlJameea Catering, Al Marzooq Catering Services and Food Supply Company Ltd. The highest offer, from Food City, was about BD1.055 million.
