A German woman convicted in a drug peddling case has had her 10-year-jail term upheld. The woman, aged 39, wasn't tried alone in connection with this case, as a Bahraini man was also charged over the same accusations. But he was cleared earlier by the High Criminal Court of any misconduct due to lack of evidence.
Police officers had initially nabbed the German woman after unearthing 16 sachets of drugs and 11 narcotic pills, as well as digital pocket scale hidden in the kitchen of her house. The property was raided by officers, after the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) received a tip off about the woman, who was reportedly promoting the use of cocaine in nightclubs. Prosecutors accused her of possessing drugs with the intention to consume and sell.
The woman, however, confessed before the court to consuming the drugs, but denied any involvement in dealing. She revealed that she was receiving the drugs from her Bahraini co-defendant, who was captured upon his arrival in Bahrain from abroad. However, he was later granted bail during the trial on residence condition.
The German woman earlier told a remand Judge that the DEA officers had only told her that she was accused of using cocaine but did not mention to her anything about the selling charge.
She said that she was also asked to sign papers without their contents being communicated to her in her own language. It's worth to note that the woman was reportedly working in an advertising company, but she had lost her job, according to court files. However, no reason was specified for her becoming jobless.
She was also fined BD5,000 by the High Criminal Court, which was also supported by the High Criminal Appeals Court.
