More than 1,000 children taken ill after eating fruit sweets in Philippines

Manila

More than 1,000 children have fallen ill in the Philippines after eating fruit-flavoured sweets sold during school breaks.

An official said no deaths had been recorded, but at least 1,080 pupils in the southern province of Surigao del Sur received emergency treatment after vomiting and complaining of nausea, dizziness, stomach pain and headaches.

They were from the provincial capital, Tandag, and the towns of Cagwait, Tago, Bayabas and Marihatag.

Roxanne Pimentel, the mayor of Tandag, said some children reported falling ill minutes after eating cheap sweets flavoured with durian, mangosteen and mango.

Seven people had been arrested and samples of the sweets would be sent for testing, she said.
