Norway’s King Haakon VIII Swears Oath to Constitution

Oslo: On Tuesday, Norway's King Haakon VIII swore an oath before parliament, the first major institutional step of his reign. His wife Queen Mette-Marit, who is recovering from a lung transplant, was unable to attend.
‘I promise and swear that I will govern the Kingdom of Norway in accordance with its Constitution and Laws, so help me god, the almighty and omniscient,’ said Haakon, who ascended to the throne on Friday upon the death of his father King Harald.
The ceremony took place in the Storting in Oslo. Following a succession, Norway's Constitution requires a new monarch to take the oath before parliament. Norway no longer holds traditional coronations, having abolished the practice in 1908.
Harald died at the age of 89, and Haakon, 53, took over as king. The kingdom is still in grief, with Harald's coffin lying in state at the Royal Palace ahead of his funeral on September 9.
