Leipzig: German police have begun a massive counterterrorism investigation after discovering a drone carrying an improvised explosive device at Leipzig/Halle Airport, one of Europe's major cargo hubs.

An airport employee noticed the drone in a restricted area near the south runway. Bomb disposal professionals safely neutralised the material, forcing officials to temporarily close runways and divert numerous planes. Airport activities resumed partially after the area was protected.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt condemned the incident as a ‘new level of danger,’ warning that it is indicative of an increasing hybrid security threat including weaponised drones. Investigators are also looking into reports that a DHL cargo plane struck an unidentified flying object during the event, causing minor damage.

Authorities have not identified the culprits, and no formal connection has been made with any foreign state or organisation. However, the matter has raised concerns about the security of crucial infrastructure, especially since Leipzig/Halle Airport serves as a key European logistics hub. The investigation is in progress.
