Swiss Cows affected by Mystery Virus illness

Geneva: Authorities in Switzerland are investigating a virus never before seen in the country after a sudden spike in dairy cow illnesses since mid-July.
The outbreak has left herds across the Alpine nation suffering from high fevers, severe diarrhea, and a sharp drop in milk production.
Preliminary testing by the Institute of Virology and Immunology detected an orthobunyavirus belonging to the Simbu group, a viral family typically found in Africa, Asia, and Australia.
Transmitted primarily by biting midges, officials confirm there is currently no vaccine available for the pathogen. Suspected cases are also gaining traction in neighboring France and Germany.
While genetic testing continues to pinpoint the exact strain, veterinary experts warn that ongoing summer heatwaves are compounding the crisis. High temperatures place severe physical stress on high-yielding dairy cows, leaving them significantly more susceptible to emerging diseases.
