Following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the film revisits Doctor Strange’s spell that erased everyone’s memory of Peter’s identity as Spider-Man. The story explores the aftermath, with Peter choosing to distance himself from those he loves while carrying guilt over Aunt May’s death.
This version of Spider-Man marks a significant evolution of the character. Gone is the constant wisecracking teenager; instead, audiences see a more mature hero confronting grief, personal growth and the consequences of his choices. Moving beyond action-driven battles, the film focuses on Peter’s internal struggle to define the hero and person he wants to become. Tom Holland delivers his best performance as Spider-Man, bringing emotional depth and vulnerability to a character navigating loss, responsibility and self-discovery.
At the heart of his journey is the realisation that facing every challenge alone does not make him stronger. The film explores how accepting support is not a weakness and that protecting others does not mean denying them the chance to stand beside him.
Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey is a major highlight, bringing depth and confidence to the powerful mutant character. Reimagined as an anti-hero, Jean adds emotional complexity with her telepathic and telekinetic abilities.
The Punisher, meanwhile, provides an unexpected lighter element, with the usually intense anti-hero revealing a softer side through his brief mentor-like interactions with Spider-Man.
The emotional centre of the film is the bond between Spider-Man and Jean Grey - two isolated individuals who find understanding in each other. Their connection reinforces the message that even the strongest heroes need companionship.
The return of familiar faces adds emotional weight, with Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned bringing back the chemistry that has defined this version of Spider-Man. Marisa Tomei also reprises her role, leaving a lasting impact on Peter’s journey, though her appearance is brief.
While it may lack the lighter tone of earlier Spider-Man outings, this darker chapter succeeds in exploring the emotional cost of being a hero and delivers a thoughtful evolution of one of Marvel’s most beloved characters.
