Australia protests China's 'destabilising' missile test

Manila: Australia has strongly criticised China's recent test of a nuclear-capable ballistic missile over the South Pacific, describing the launch as "destabilising" and raising the issue directly with Beijing during regional talks in Manila. Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Australia wants all nations to respect international law and preserve peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.

The missile, fired by a Chinese submarine earlier this month with a dummy warhead, travelled deep into the Pacific Ocean. Australia said it was not given sufficient advance notice, while several Pacific Island nations condemned the launch for undermining the region's long-standing opposition to nuclear weapons testing.

Wong's remarks came a day after she criticised China's actions in the South China Sea following a confrontation between Chinese and Philippine personnel at the disputed Second Thomas Shoal. She reiterated Australia's concerns over behaviour that increases regional tensions and threatens stability.

During her visit to the Philippines, Wong also announced Australian support for the Philippine Coast Guard through the donation of advanced drone technology and operator training, reinforcing Canberra's commitment to regional maritime security.
