Woman loses sister, husband in accident

An Indian family’s outing to Ras Al Khaimah's Jebel Jais mountain in UAE turned tragic when their car met with a fatal accident on Friday.

According to Khaleej Times, the deceased have been identified as Sameena Banu (42) and her sister's husband, Mohammed Nayeem (34), and three others of the family sustained minor to serious injuries in the accident on the Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

A police source told Khaleej Times that the accident occurred around 3am when the family was heading back from Ras Al Khaimah to Dubai in their SUV.

"Initial investigation showed that the driver did not notice the road work and diversion in the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain and rammed the vehicle into a road barrier, possibly because he was sleepy, exhausted or inattentive."

The car reportedly flipped over several times, he added. "One sister and the husband of the other died on the spot while three other people, including two sons of the killed woman and the brother of the man, received injuries. They were rushed to the Shaikh Khalifa hospital for medical care."

A relative of the family in Dubai told Khaleej Times that the family hailed from Mangalore in Karnataka and had gone for a night drive to Jebel Jais, the highest mountain in the UAE, on Thursday night. "We got to know about the accident about 4am. We were told it took place near the exit 103."

Sameena Banu was a housewife and a mother of three sons while Nayeem, who worked with Toshiba in Jebel Ali, is survived by his wife Farah, who is Banu's younger sister, and a son, he added.

"We have managed to get the police report and the UAQ prosecution's approval to bury the bodies in the graveyard of the Emirate of Ajman," he said.

The relative said one of Sameena Banu’s son had been hospitalised while the other two people, who both received minor injuries, were discharged from the hospital. "They have attended the funeral prayer and burial of the deceased," he said.
