NEW DELHI: India has officially launched its first hydrogen-powered train, joining a small group of nations testing the clean technology to decarbonise rail transport and cut its dependence on fossil fuels. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the historic inaugural journey in Haryana..
The ten-coach train runs along an eighty-nine-kilometre route between Jind and Sonipat. Powered by a twelve-hundred-kilowatt fuel cell system, it combines hydrogen and oxygen to emit only water and steam.
Modi hailed the launch as a highly significant day for a self-reliant India and sustainable development. While developed domestically, officials acknowledged that some key components, including the fuel cells, were imported from abroad.
To support operations, a new three-thousand-kilogram railway hydrogen storage and refuelling facility was inaugurated in Jind. The pilot project cost twelve million dollars, though costs are expected to fall as the technology matures.
This launch modernizes one of the world's largest rail networks, which carried over seven billion passengers last year. India now joins countries like Germany and China in testing clean hydrogen-powered rail.
