Damascus: Nine people were killed and 20 others wounded after a powerful bomb blast ripped through a Damascus cafe on Thursday.

The explosion occurred near the capital's Palace of Justice, marking a severe security challenge for Syria's new Islamist leadership as they attempt to stabilize the war-torn nation.

According to the interior ministry, the attack involved an improvised explosive device packed with sharp metal fragments that caused extensive injuries.

No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the deadly blast, which marks the bloodiest incident in the capital since mid-2025.

Arriving at the scene, Damascus governor Maher Eldibi announced that authorities had launched an immediate investigation. Eldibi strongly condemned the act of terror, firmly declaring that those responsible for this bloodshed will be punished.

The tragedy directly undermines ongoing stabilization and reunification efforts by President Ahmed al-Sharaa's government, which took control after toppling Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. International bodies, including the United Nations, Turkey, and the Arab League, quickly denounced the violence.
