Madrid: Spain’s top law enforcement chief faces a formal investigation for allegedly scheming to sabotage corruption probes targeting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s ruling Socialist government.

High Court Judge Santiago Pedraz summoned Civil Guard Director General Mercedes Gonzalez and deputy Manuel Llamas to testify as suspects on July 16, citing clear evidence of official misconduct and obstruction of justice.

Investigators suspect disgraced former Socialist heavyweights orchestrated the illicit plot to destabilize sensitive legal inquiries surrounding the prime minister's close entourage.

Gonzalez firmly denies any wrongdoing. However, this brewing scandal deals a severe blow to Sanchez’s fragile minority coalition government, which assumed power on strict anti-graft promises.

Despite intense pressure from conservative opposition leaders demanding immediate resignations, Sanchez has rejected accusations of widespread party corruption. He insists his government will complete its mandate through 2027, refusing to call early elections.
