Sydney: Arsen Ostrovsky, a survivor of the deadly 2024 Bondi Beach attack, told Australia's Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion that AI-generated pictures and online conspiracy theories exacerbated the pain he felt after being wounded in the attack.

Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer, said that a blood-stained selfie he shared with a friend shortly after the incident was modified by artificial intelligence and widely shared online. The manipulated photographs falsely presented him as a ‘crisis actor,’ with some alleging his injuries were fabricated while he was getting ready for surgery.

Ostrovsky described the online harassment as a ‘influx of hate’ during his testimony to the panel on Monday, saying that deepfakes and falsified tweets spread ‘like wildfire’ throughout social media platforms. He claimed that the misinformation worsened the emotional toll of surviving the attack and encouraged antisemitic hatred thrown at him.

The commission is looking into how social media platforms, AI-generated content, and online hate speech have exacerbated misinformation following big occurrences. Ostrovsky's statement has sparked renewed calls for greater action against malicious AI use and speedier removal of harmful material from the internet.
