Rome : American swimmer Gretchen Walsh has set a new women's 50m freestyle world record, clocking 23.55 seconds at the Sette Colli meeting in Rome.
The 23-year-old broke the previous record of 23.59 seconds, set by her University of Virginia training partner Kate Douglass just nine days earlier. Sweden's Sarah Sjöström, who held the record before Douglass, finished second in 23.86 seconds.
Walsh, who also holds the short-course 50m freestyle world record and the long-course 100m butterfly world record, continues her impressive run after winning two gold and two silver medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
