Rio de Janeiro : Brazilian football star Neymar Jr. has reportedly donated USD 250,000 to support relief and rescue operations following the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela, leaving at least 1,430 people dead and thousands more affected.
The donation will help provide food, clean drinking water, temporary shelter and other emergency supplies to families impacted by the disaster. Neymar reportedly expressed his sympathy for the victims, saying he hoped the contribution would bring relief to those affected.
The twin earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, caused widespread destruction across Venezuela. More than 3,238 people were injured and over 3,100 families were displaced, prompting international humanitarian assistance. India has also launched Operation Amistad, sending 66 tonnes of relief supplies and a specialised medical team to support rescue efforts.
Meanwhile, Neymar is continuing his recovery at the FIFA World Cup after returning from injury. The 34 year old made a brief substitute appearance in Brazil's 3-0 win over Scotland, with coach Carlo Ancelotti saying the forward has made significant progress and could feature for longer in the team's next match against Japan.
