SAN FRANCISCO: YouTube has officially reached a confidential settlement with a 15-year-old American teenager, successfully averting an upcoming US addiction trial. The case, which centered on allegations that social media usage harmed the plaintiff's mental health, was a key bellwether for thousands of similar lawsuits nationwide.
Regarding the agreement, a Google spokesperson stated that the company has built its platform responsibly for over a decade and remains focused on age-appropriate products and parental controls. The settlement involves no admission of liability from YouTube.
While YouTube has resolved this specific claim, other major platforms including Meta, TikTok, and Snapchat remain defendants in the case, which is set for trial on July 27 in Los Angeles.
The litigation landscape is active, with over 30 US states currently suing Meta in a separate case over similar allegations, with a potential trial scheduled for August in Oakland.
