Mexico City: Authorities in Mexico City have announced a temporary restriction on alcohol sales in important downtown areas during Wednesday's FIFA World Cup Group A match between Mexico and Czechia in an attempt to prevent mayhem after the massive celebrations that followed Mexico's most recent victory.

Reforma Avenue, the old city centre, and the Zona Rosa entertainment district will all be closed from 3 p.m. on Wednesday until 7 a.m. on Thursday. Bars and restaurants may continue to offer alcohol onsite, but supermarkets, grocery stores, and convenience retailers in the affected areas will not be allowed to sell alcoholic beverages.

About 40 metric tonnes of trash were left behind by a crowd of countless supporters that rushed to downtown after Mexico defeated South Korea. According to officials, the temporary restriction is intended to maintain public order and ensure a safer game day environment. In Mexico, drinking in public is illegal.
