London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing growing pressure from within the Labour Party after Andy Burnham secured a decisive victory in the Makerfield by-election, fuelling speculation about a potential leadership challenge.
Several Labour MPs have urged Starmer to consider setting a timetable for his departure and allow a smooth transition of power, with Burnham emerging as a leading contender to succeed him. However, the prime minister has insisted he will remain in office and contest any leadership challenge.
Burnham's victory, which saw Labour increase its vote share and comfortably defeat Reform UK, has strengthened calls from some party members for a change in leadership. Supporters of the former Greater Manchester mayor argue that his win demonstrates strong backing among voters.
While some senior Labour figures have publicly backed Starmer, others have suggested the party should discuss its future direction. A key test for the prime minister could come at next week's cabinet meeting, where senior ministers are expected to assess the party's position following the by-election result.
Burnham, who will return to Parliament as Makerfield's MP, has not formally announced any leadership bid but is now eligible to stand for the Labour leadership if a contest is triggered.
