Brussels:European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has welcomed the agreement between the United States and Iran, calling for its rapid implementation and describing it as a significant opportunity to reduce tensions in the Middle East.
Von der Leyen said the agreement should lead to the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the restoration of freedom of navigation, which she described as vital for regional stability and the global economy.
She said the deal could create momentum for broader negotiations on peace and security across the Middle East, while also addressing concerns over Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes and its regional activities.
The European Commission chief stressed that lasting peace in the region would also require an end to violence in Lebanon. She reiterated Europe's call for all parties to respect Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity and to implement a genuine ceasefire.
Looking ahead to the G7 summit in Evian, von der Leyen said European leaders would meet partners from the Gulf and the wider Middle East to discuss regional security and economic cooperation.
She also said the recent crisis highlighted the risks posed by dependence on key energy transit routes, arguing that countries should diversify supply chains and develop alternative export corridors to reduce reliance on strategic chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz.
