LONDON: David Hockney, one of the most influential and celebrated British artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday. He was 88 years old, just one month shy of his 89th birthday. His death marks the end of an era for a figure who reimagined classical portraiture and landscape painting through a lens of vibrant optimism and relentless innovation.
Born in Bradford in 1937, Hockney rose to prominence in the 1960s as a leading voice of the British Pop Art movement. Throughout a career spanning seven decades, Hockney refused to conform to fleeting artistic trends. He worked across diverse mediums, including photography, printmaking, and stage design.
In his later years, he became a pioneer of digital art, famously using iPhones and iPads to create intricate drawings of the changing seasons. His 2021 exhibition, The Arrival of Spring, Normandy, 2020, showcased his ability to find joy and hope even during global confinement.
Hockney’s publicist, Erica Bolton, released a statement honoring his legacy: “David Hockney’s enduring legacy reflects his underlying enthusiasm for life, his outstanding sense of humour, his immense generosity,
