The United Nations Secretary-General has expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict in the Middle East, warning that continued military actions and rising hostile rhetoric risk further destabilising the region.
In a statement delivered by UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the Secretary-General highlighted recent strikes by the United States on Iran, as well as Iranian strikes targeting neighbouring Gulf countries and other states not directly involved in the conflict. He noted that the widening scope of hostilities is increasingly threatening regional and global stability.
The Secretary-General urged all parties to immediately return to full compliance with ceasefire arrangements and to avoid any further deterioration of the situation. He warned that continued escalation could lead to a full resumption of the conflict, with unpredictable and far-reaching consequences, particularly for vulnerable countries.
Reiterating key principles of international law, he stressed that freedom of navigation must be respected. He also called on all sides to uphold their legal obligations and take all feasible precautions to protect civilian populations.
The UN chief emphasized that the only viable path forward is through genuine dialogue and negotiations. He further urged the United States and Iran to intensify diplomatic efforts toward achieving a peaceful, comprehensive, and lasting agreement that strengthens both regional and international security.
