Mexico City: A Mexican crime reporter was killed by gunmen in the eastern state of Veracruz, highlighting the hazards that journalists face in one of the world's most treacherous countries for the press.
Luis Ángel López Valdez, director of a local media group and correspondent for Vanguardia de Veracruz, was killed at close range while walking in Poza Rica on Thursday, authorities said. He became famous for his reporting on crime, law enforcement, and security. There have been no arrests reported so far.
Investigators are looking into whether the murder was related to his journalism profession. This is the second murder of a journalist in Veracruz this year, a state long regarded as one of Mexico's most dangerous for media workers.
The attack came when Mexicans are increasingly concerned about journalistic freedom. According to President Claudia Sheinbaum, the probe involves both federal and state authorities.
Press freedom organisations have repeatedly raised concerns that violence against journalists remains a major issue in Mexico, where murders and harassment are frequently unchecked.
