Kavaratti: The Indian Union Territory of Lakshadweep has officially ended its 47-year alcohol prohibition by repealing the Lakshadweep Prohibition Act of 1979. This landmark administrative decision is designed to transform the Indian archipelago into a major global tourism hub by aligning its regulations with international hospitality standards.
Under the new policy, the administration will grant licenses for the sale and consumption of liquor within designated resorts and premium tourist zones on inhabited islands. Previously, alcohol consumption was strictly restricted to the uninhabited island of Bangaram. This shift is a strategic move to cater to the preferences of international travelers and domestic tourists seeking a luxury holiday experience comparable to those in other global island destinations.
By modernizing these decades-old laws, the Indian administration aims to boost the local economy and attract high-end investments in the hospitality sector. This change signals Lakshadweep’s readiness to compete on the world stage, offering a more inclusive and competitive environment for global travelers.
