BRICS Calls for Maximum Restraint as Middle East Tensions Escalate
Members of the 11-nation BRICS group, including China, Russia, India and Iran, have called for maximum restraint as tensions continue to escalate across the Middle East.
In a joint statement issued at the BRICS summit in New Delhi on Saturday, the group expressed deep concern over the situation in the Middle East and West Asia, warning against actions that could further worsen the conflict.
BRICS also condemned deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities operating under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards, stressing that nuclear safety and security must be maintained even during armed conflicts.
The statement called for greater international cooperation to protect global peace and security, while also stressing the need to maintain the flow of global trade, supply chains and energy in accordance with international law.
The joint statement followed intense diplomatic efforts by host India after BRICS foreign ministers failed to reach an agreement on a joint statement during their meeting in May.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian were among the leaders attending the summit in New Delhi.
