Geneva: Nearly 500 cases of Ebola have now been confirmed in the deadly outbreak raging across Central Africa, according to a Saturday situation overview by the World Health Organization.
In its daily update, the WHO tallied 452 confirmed cases, including 82 deaths, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the epidemic was officially declared just three weeks ago. Meanwhile, neighboring Uganda has counted 19 confirmed cases and two deaths, pushing the regional total to 471 cases as international concern mounts over the swelling scale of the crisis.
The rapid spike in infections and fatalities has triggered an immediate response from emergency medical teams and local health authorities. Health workers are prioritizing patient isolation and contact tracing to break transmission chains.
However, containment operations face steep challenges due to strained healthcare infrastructure and severe logistical hurdles, making immediate international funding and coordination vital to halt the further spread in the region.
