KYIV: NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has arrived in Kyiv for an unannounced visit, following a series of fatal Russian missile and drone attacks on the Ukrainian capital.
The alliance chief's surprise arrival on Wednesday was initially made public by Ukraine’s national railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia. The company shared photos on social media of Rutte at the central station, hailing the visit as a vital gesture of solidarity and support. However, the railway operator deleted the post and images shortly after publication.
Rutte’s unannounced trip comes at a tense moment, occurring just hours after Ukrainian drones hit energy and military targets inside Russia. During his trip, Rutte is expected to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has repeatedly appealed to NATO alliance members for urgent defensive assistance to protect Ukrainian cities from ongoing ballistic missile strikes.
