Lisbon: A 24-hour general strike has severely disrupted public transportation, trash collection, and municipal services across Portugal as workers protest proposed government labor reforms.
The nationwide stoppage, organized by the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers (CGTP), heavily impacted key public services, including schools and hospitals.
In the capital city of Lisbon, metro stations were completely closed, forcing commuting crowds onto limited bus routes. Disruption was highly visible at the central Santa Apolónia railway station, where digital departure boards displayed widespread cancellations and delays.
The mass labor strike reflects intense public opposition to the administration's planned legislative changes to the national labor code.
While union leaders firmly criticize the measures for eroding vital worker protections, the center-right government maintains that the updates are essential to modernize the economy. The strike highlights a deep standoff between state officials and unions demanding fairer working conditions.
