EU wants to break up with US tech

Brussels: The European Union is unveiling a sweeping ‘technological sovereignty package’ designed to end its structural dependence on American digital companies and Chinese semiconductors.
Scheduled for presentation this Wednesday, the strategy represents a critical shift in Brussels’ effort to reclaim power in the global geoeconomic race.
European officials are increasingly wary of being vulnerable to the whims of foreign governments, particularly following President Donald Trump’s return to power.
A primary concern is the 70 percent market dominance of U.S. cloud providers, which the EU fears could be weaponized via an American ‘kill switch’ during periods of political tension.
The package includes the ‘Cloud and AI Development Act’ and a reinforced ‘Chips Act’ to secure supply chains. Furthermore, the plan introduces extraordinary crisis powers, allowing the European Commission to force manufacturers to prioritize critical orders and act as a central buyer for member states.
Despite warnings of protectionism from Washington, the EU maintains that resilience is essential for its economic and security values.
