Five of Seven Trapped in Laos Cave Found Alive After Week Underground

Vientiane: Rescue officials said on Wednesday that five of the seven people trapped in a flooded cave in central Laos had been found alive after spending almost a week underground. Heavy rain and a landslip prevented the group from exiting the cave in Xaisomboun province, where they had gone in search of gold.

In order to find the missing villagers, rescue teams from Laos and neighbouring Thailand had to navigate the cave's unstable conditions and flooded passages. The five survivors were reportedly in good health when they were found on Wednesday afternoon.

Rescuers posted videos of the trapped individuals engaging with rescue workers and smiling when they were located. As they get ready for their safe evacuation, emergency workers started to offer food, water, and medical support.

The search is still ongoing for the two missing persons. The officials say professional cave divers are working on the mission, which has been connected to the historic 2018 Thai cave rescue that drew global attention.
